Credit Union was born in July of 1956. Created to serve the
employees of Associated Truck Lines, it eventually grew to include
many other transportation companies.
After merging
with GRATA Credit Union (Grand Rapids Area Transit Authority...you
know them now as The Rapid), Associated Truck Lines closed. At this
time, the credit union's membership was made up primarily of truck
and bus drivers, and we made long-distance service a specialty.
Today, we offer
financial services to anyone who lives or works in Kent or Ottawa
county, and all of their immediate family members.
A credit union
is often confused with a bank because it offers many of the same
services: savings, checking account, debit cards and loans. However
there are three big differences between your credit union and a
bank!
1. Your credit
union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative. After the cost of
operations, all money earned through loan interest and fees is
returned to the entire membership in the form of higher dividends
and lower loan interest rates.
2. There are no
stockholders. Every member has one share ($5) and one vote.
3. Your credit
union is guided by a volunteer board of directors. They are not
compensated and they are members just like you, with a single share
and a single vote.
The credit
union motto is: Not for Profit, Not for Charity, But for Service. We
have a long history of working for our members.
